About the SiteCentral Tools |
SiteCentral is a set of software tools that makes it easy to create
a neighborhood web site. The tools make it easy to enter information about
a neighborhood, they create the WEB pages for the site, and they are very
clever at linking related pages. When you have about 4000 pages
online, the SiteCentral Tools make the difference
between a consistent, up-to-date, easily manageable site,
and an unweildy mess of a site.
On NYSite the Upper West Side there are only a handful of pages that are built the old fashioned way, by hand. In fact, there are so few we can list them here: the site home page, the about page, the geographical guide pages, this page, and the feedback pages. (In addition, NYSite has the City Naturalist area, a hand-built sub-site for those interested in nature in the city, and the wide view of the Upper West Side, which is just a fun photo.)
Even though the vast majority of this site is machine-made, there is tremendous flexibility in the process. Merchant pages can be extended to as many pages as necessary, with whatever content is needed. Calendars are linked in and updated automatically. Intra-site links and off-site links can be added easily. And we're constantly working on making the SiteCentral Tools even more flexible.
Best of all, the SiteCentral Tools will work for any neighborhood. They don't contain a single instruction specific to Manhattan - everything, from street names to street layout to category names, is configurable. If you're interested in starting a neighborhood site, please get in touch. It's easy, it's fun, in fact it's one of the easiest ways to get into the exciting world of the Internet.
